Dictionary.com defines “helpful” as “giving or rendering aid or assistance; of service”. And while that definition seems to be a positive one, the word has a less than positive connotation to me.

Consider how a snippy “friend” might respond after stabbing you in the back: “But I was just trying to be helpful,” said with a whine. Or a husband who shrinks your favorite cashmere sweater in the washer: “Well, if you don’t want me to be helpful,” said in a huff (while wanting to be absolved of any more washing duties).

And at this point in the A-Z Challenge, it will be helpful if I just give up and go to sleep. I am too tired to think any further. Good night.
