This evening my daughter, two granddaughters, and I went to the Tulare County Fair. It was very warm (97 when we left home), but we agreed ahead of time to no rides, just visiting the animals, domestic arts and photography, and (our main reason for going) the Junior Hobby Competition. This year’s theme is “Celebrating the Bounty of the County”.

Lily was exhibiting as an Independent Junior, which meant she was not part of an FFA, 4H, or school group. She entered three items: a wonderful collage of a fancy pig, an American Girl scrapbook, and a diorama of a barn, paddock, and horses. We spotted them right away, inside a display case filled with other Blue Ribbon items. Yep, she took first place in each thing she entered. What a happy dance she did in front of that case!

We visited the animals, too–there were FFA kids showing steers in one ring, and more FFA kids showing hogs in another. And then there were all the chickens and rabbits in the “fur and feathers” building. Best of all (besides Lily’s blue ribbons) was the petting zoo, where there were small animals, small people, big animals, big people, all milling around and having a high old time. After following her all around, I finally was able to pose for a picture with one of the two fawns — she was fast! And they had llamas, deer, goats, lambs, a calf, and even two wallaroos. Such fun!

Fawn with the fawn. This little guy was fast...every time Georgia would get ready to snap the picture, she would leave.

The Tulare County Fair runs through Sunday…I highly recommend it!
