Today marks the first day of our new NaBloPoMo for February, with the theme of “make”. So my plan was to get card ideas during the Superbowl game this afternoon, then move to the kitchen table and make Valentines for the ladies of the Cuesta Doll Club. Of course, like many of my great plans, this one got highjacked by Georgia.
I left the room briefly and she grabbed the remote (surprise!) and found the movie “Divergent”. Not only did she find it, but she told me I needed to watch it, now. I explained my plan for the evening, and was told I needed to watch it anyway! If you haven’t seen it, just let me tell you that I’m absolutely exhausted from helping the main character survive the movie — if you have, you will understand why! Not to mention that the subject matter wasn’t exactly conducive to creating romantic little fluffy cards.
But I persisted, and here are two Valentines I have to show for my movie watching experience (I actually finished six of the sixteen I need):
Both cards were made on 5-1/2×4″ White Daisy cards from Close To My Heart, red cardstock from my stash, white embossed heart from Martha Stewart, Valentine’s novelty ribbons from Joann’s Fabrics, and toile illustrations taken the “Dear Jane” stack by DCWV.
(And if you get a chance, watch “Divergent”. It really is an excellent movie.)

One of the things I have learned over the last few months is that keeping both of my blogs current and fresh is a struggle. So I’m sharing today’s Trigger’s Horse posting with Photo Fun With Fawn. Enjoy!

A few years back I was reading quite a bit of YA to improve my tepid YA manuscript skills. I haven’t read the Divergent series or watched the movie, though I’ve seen many a teen in school carrying these books around. At some point, probably this summer, I need to play catch up with this market. I just hope I can keep up with the teenagers!

Five or so years ago, when we reopened the Woodville Elementary School Library, I was helping the aide who would be assigned there register for her Library Technology classes (which was really cool, as she was going to attend online at Cuesta Community College, where I got my AA 45 years ago). I discovered a wonderful course in connecting young people with literature, which meant I was exposed to a whole new world of YA books written after my own kids got too old for them. I didn’t read Divergent then, either, but discovered Lois Lowry and many other amazing authors. There are some wonderful books out there waiting for you! – Fawn

Yes, I have to return to YA soon. I enjoyed Jonathan Stroud’s Bartimaeus trilogy – read it twice. Enjoyed Scott Westerfield’s Specials series. There’s much I’ve missed though 🙂

Love your cards, Fawn — just as I love Valentine’s Day (really, my favorite holiday of all time)! 🙂

Valentine’s Day was one of Mom’s favorite holidays, and she had wonderful antique and vintage Valentines and other paper ephemera that she would display. She and her friends had a beautiful manzanita branch that they had sprayed white, and she would make a Valentine tree with red and pink hearts and crystal drops to use as a centerpiece. I miss her decorating (but I miss her the most). – Fawn
